HELPFUL TIP:

Conflict is your story’s secret sauce, supplying tension, relationship friction, and complications to a character’s journey. It comes in a million different forms, so identify the obstacles and problems that will hit your character the hardest by using the Character Builder to uncover their primary insecurities, fears , and desires. Don’t forget to include everyday conflict scenarios that will frustrate them and keep the pressure high.
CATEGORY:
Loss of control, losing an advantage, ego-related conflict, failures and mistakes, no-win scenarios

NOTES:
A scam is any deliberate attempt to defraud someone. It usually involves cheating people out of their money, but other valuable commodities can be stolen as well. Below are some scams your character could fall victim to.

EXAMPLES:
Replying to an email that requests login or bank account information
Investing in an opportunity where the money spent goes to the person running the scam
Fake census workers gathering personal information over the phone
Being promised government grant money for a high-cost expense, such as college tuition
Pyramid and Ponzi schemes
Being sold a fake ticket to an event
Giving money to a non-existent charity
Shelling out money for promised services that shouldn't have to be paid for—i.e., paying to have a book published through a vanity publisher
Sending money to someone pretending to be a relative in distress
Spending money for services or products the character never receives—e.g., paying for headshots, then finding out the company has "gone out of business" before they come in
"Winning" a sweepstakes and having to provide bank account information to access the funds

MINOR COMPLICATIONS:
The hassle of having to get new credit cards, bank accounts, etc.
Having to change passwords and close email accounts
Embarrassment arising from telling people what happened
Having to cut back on personal expenses to make up for the loss
Delaying certain purchases or a vacation
Reliving the humiliation when reporting the scam or pressing charges
Having to cash in an investment early to offset the loss
The character repeatedly having to prove their identity (because identify theft was involved)
