HELPFUL TIP:

Amplifiers are conditions that enhance emotions, causing characters to become more volatile. This often leads to impaired decision-making, hasty actions, relationship friction, and, best of all, mistakes. When utilizing an amplifier to generate conflict, think carefully about setting choices and which environments will naturally escalate emotion. An amplifier can also be perfect for triggering your character’s negative traits; the resulting fallout will draw attention to how his flaws trip him up and hold him back.
DESCRIPTION:
Rivalry—when a character is pitted against others who want the same thing—creates psychological strain because the outcome is uncertain. While competition is frequently associated with athletics, it can manifest at work and school (vying for a promotion or academic award), in relationships (competing for a love interest's attention or a parent's approval), and anywhere else a position of power or object of desire can be won. Regardless of the context, the character's response to this amplifier will vary depending on how prepared they are and whether they anticipate success or failure.
