HELPFUL TIP:

A deeply embedded fear often stems from trauma, so it can be helpful to explore emotional wounds that may be a factor. Your character might also become risk-averse, which can create problems in their relationships and limit their fulfillment. And for a character to achieve their story goal, they must overcome any fear-based thinking that's holding them back. The Character Builder is a great resource for pulling all these factors together.
NOTES:
As a social creature, your character will belong to certain groups, and it's human nature for them to want to climb to the top of the strata within those circles. Reaching that pinnacle is exhilarating but can become a challenge when the character realizes that their position is tenuous and must be actively maintained. The fear of losing their social standing and everything that comes with it may drive them to hold onto what they've achieved regardless of the cost.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:
Looking for external validation
Conforming to the ideals of the group
Hiding or downplaying information that would impact the character's reputation (a physical "weakness," family secret, etc.)
Overspending to maintain a certain status or impress others
Flaunting successes, achievements, and costly purchases
One-upping others
Choosing romantic partners based on income and status rather than compatibility
Joining the "right" clubs and societies
Throwing lavish parties
Ingratiating themselves with the elite of their social group
Snubbing people who don't meet the standards of their peer group
Always portraying an image that would be approved by the group
Engaging in activities simply to keep up an appearance
Engaging in a hobby solely as a means of connecting with the "right" people
Seeing relationships as transactional; making decisions based on what the other person can do for the character
Working really hard to be the best and stay at the top of the food chain
