Bakers typically work in a shop or factory setting and are responsible for preparing and decorating baked goods. They also oversee quality control of the products, help gather ingredients, and fulfill orders. In the course of a shift they mix batters and doughs to produce breads, buns, cookies, cakes, pies, and other goods the bakery specializes in. They also oversee the cooking and packaging of products, following health and safety protocols. Bakers also test new recipes and adjust existing ones to improve them. Depending on the setting, bakers could be creating items for individual customers or large orders for a wholesaler.

Though bakers often receive training through culinary school or an apprenticeship, in most cases, no formal education is required. Bakeries, restaurants, and factories usually have specialized training through that facility to teach the necessary skills for the position. However, any prior experience is beneficial, and basic knowledge of food safety is a must. It's common to start at an entry-level position before moving up into a specialty field. If the baker is also the owner, having experience in running a business, hiring and overseeing employees, managing inventory, and understanding marketing and sales are also necessary.
