CHOOSE MY PLAN

HELPFUL TIP:

There’s probably a good reason why your character chose their career. Think about how certain talents and skills, a dominant positive or negative trait, or even an emotional wound might have influenced this decision. And once they're on the job, don't forget about the many work-related conflict scenarios you can throw at them to create tension and add complications.
OVERVIEW:
A food stylist prepares and arranges food for cookbooks, magazines, advertisements, movies, TV shows, and more. They strive to make food look as appealing and appetizing as possible by considering the color, texture, and shape of food, as well as how different cooking methods affect the final visual product. Some professional stylists will work with art directors and photographers to create an aesthetic vision while others (such as food bloggers) may do most or all of the work themselves, including designing the scene where the food will be set. Food stylists will typically cook the food they are working with and may use inedible products (such as plastic ice cubes, "incense" steam, or spray-on deodorant for extra shine) to get the desired visual effect.

NECESSARY TRAINING:
Formal education is common among successful food stylists but is not required. Many attend culinary arts programs, though food styling itself is not often a degree. A strong portfolio and resumé are more important than training when finding work. They generally work as chefs and shadow working food stylists before finding their own success.
