Whether they’re familial, social, or professional in nature, relationships matter because they offer something of value to the parties involved. The nature of the relationship will often depend on what needs they meet; a healthy relationship will provide positive things (love, security, support) while an unhealthy one meets more dysfunctional needs (control, validation, an escape from other problems).
