HELPFUL TIP:

Don’t be afraid to pair weather conditions with your setting choice to contrast or reinforce a character’s emotions. Hopelessness might be mirrored in the relentless drizzle of rain and the resulting heavy drag of one’s clothes; alternatively, this feeling can stand out in stark contrast to sunlight dancing over fresh snow. Can weather also provide symbolism, thereby enriching the reader’s experience? Think about your goal for the scene and the mood you are trying to create, and then layer your description with meaningful choices.
SIGHTS:
Vortex energy is an unseen force, but in high and open locations, it can be accompanied by substantial winds. Debris (dust, dirt, dead leaves, etc.) may be seen swirling in the air; anchored grass or weeds at the site may quiver from the wind's force. Trees and plants living within the range of a vortex will sometimes grow strangely, with twisted stems or bark, or have other oddities (larger flowers, misshapen leaves) than the same species growing elsewhere.

TEXTURES AND SENSATIONS:
A sensation of vertigo
Hair lifting on one's arms and the back of the neck
Dizziness
Vibrations felt throughout the body
Euphoria
Heightened senses
Seeing colors or auras
Goose bumps
An expanding feeling inside one's chest
A breeze sliding across one's skin and clothing (if at a higher altitude)
An overall feeling of being charged with energy

SOUNDS:
Location-specific sounds may appear amplified within a vortex, sounding clearer and sharper. The sound of rushing wind can also have a hollow and haunting quality to it.

REINFORCING A MOOD:
Because an energy vortex is usually outside of most people's understanding or experience, it infuses scenes with apprehension (good or bad). For readers, it sets the expectation that something unexpected or unusual will happen, heightening suspense.
